Active Listening - Irenicast Episode 021 - Conversations on Faith and Culture - An Irenicon

Ever ones to speak, the team takes on the topic of active listening this week. Jeff, Mona and Allen discuss the elements of good listening, the habitual quirks of bad listening, and offer ideas concerning the cultivation of listening as both art and skill. The latest installment of Knowin’ Jemonen follows the discussion and reveals the co-hosts’ favorite works of fiction.

This week Allen presented us with some helpful tips on how to create a space where we can make people feel heard.

  1. Pay Attention (stay with the person on the edge of their experience)
  2. Nonjudgement
  3. Generally embrace the speaker’s perspective
  4. Concreteness (focus on specifics instead of vague generalities)
    1. Restatement (repeat what the person said)
    2. Rephrasing (slightly reword and summarize)
    3. Reflection (“it sounds like you feel”)
  5. The Three R’s
  6. Be comfortable with silence
    1. Why questions (can be taken as accusatory)
    2. Quick reassurance (“oh, it’s ok…”)
    3. Advising
    4. Interrupting
  7. Avoid Roadblocks to Listening
